FIELD NOTES · VISUAL JOURNAL

Light, land
and quiet places.

A small notebook of original illustrations and observations from the natural world.

The ridge at first light

Distance turns a complicated landscape into a few simple shapes. Before the sun reaches the valley, each ridge has its own shade of green. The closest trees are dark and precise; beyond them the hills soften into the sky.

These studies begin with three colours and a single horizon. They are an exercise in noticing what can be left out, and what gives a place its character.

Still water, changing sky

A lake is never quite the colour we expect. It borrows from the clouds, the trees, and the time of day. Even on a windless evening, light moves across the surface and a familiar shore becomes something new.

The horizontal marks in this drawing are deliberately spare: reflections suggest depth without explaining every detail.

A slower practice

Keep a notebook close to the window. Draw the same view at different hours. Use a limited palette, make room for empty space, and look again tomorrow. The purpose of a visual journal is to build attention, one small observation at a time.
